🚆 Getting to Kauffman Stadium
Driving is the norm at Kauffman Stadium: it sits in the Truman Sports Complex off I-70 and I-435, surrounded by enormous surface lots built for tailgating, with only limited bus service.
Transit options are genuinely limited — the complex sits about 10 miles east of downtown with no walkable neighborhood around it. RideKC's 47-Broadway bus serves the stadium seven days a week along Blue Ridge Cutoff, with the closest eastbound stop at Blue Ridge Cutoff at 40th Terrace, and Route 29 also stops nearby on Blue Ridge Cutoff; check RideKC schedules, as evening service thins out.
Kauffman Stadium is virtually surrounded by lettered parking lots in the Truman Sports Complex, designated West or East for Royals games, and cars cannot cross from one side to the other, so pick your approach to match your seats. The complex is easily accessible from I-70 (Blue Ridge Cutoff, Exit 9) and I-435, parking can be pre-purchased, and arriving early for the tailgate scene in the lots is part of the experience.
Rideshare drop-off is in the middle of Lot A on the first-base side near Gates D and E, and post-game pick-up is in the same Lot A area.
🛏️ Where to stay near Kauffman Stadium
There is no walkable hotel district at the stadium, so most visiting fans stay Downtown or at the Country Club Plaza and drive to the game, unless they only care about being close to the park.
- Downtown Kansas City / Power & Light District — The preferred base for a Kansas City sports weekend, with the Power & Light entertainment district's restaurants and nightlife. It is a drive of roughly 15-20 minutes east on I-70 to the Truman Sports Complex.
- Country Club Plaza — Kansas City's historic shopping and dining district, with fountains, Spanish-inspired architecture and many restaurants. A good fit if exploring and eating well matter as much as the game; plan on driving to the ballpark.
- Near the Truman Sports Complex — A small number of hotels sit near I-70 by the stadiums for fans whose trip is only about Royals games. There is no entertainment or restaurant scene within walking distance of the complex itself.
🎟️ Game-day tips for Kauffman Stadium
Arrive early and make time for the outfield: the 322-foot Water Spectacular fountains and the Royals Hall of Fame are the two things first-timers should not miss.
- See the Water Spectacular up close — The fountains beyond the outfield wall stretch 322 feet and are described as the largest privately funded fountains in the world, rising after Royals home runs and between innings and changing colors at night. The renovated outfield concourse lets you watch the game from behind the fountains.
- Visit the Royals Hall of Fame — Located in left field as part of the Outfield Experience, the Royals Hall of Fame is an interactive museum covering team history including the 1985 and 2015 World Series teams. It is worth arriving early for, before the outfield gets busy.
- Plan for sun at day games — Kauffman is an open, baseball-only park and summer day games get strong sun and heat, so shaded and covered seats are worth seeking out; one documented perch is Section 311, noted by visitors as under cover for rain or sun. Evening games are the more comfortable choice in mid-summer.
Bags: Only clear bags no larger than 12" x 12" x 6" (or a one-gallon clear zip-seal bag) are approved for entry, along with a small clutch no larger than 9" x 5"; backpacks are not allowed. Official policy.
